A new Greenway on the Wild Atlantic Way?

An emerging Galway to Athlone Cycleway/Greenway has 5 route options for a substantially segregated Greenway is in the final stages of public consultation. Four of these route options will connect Galway-Athlone via Athenry. Route 5, on the other hand, will contribute to at least 30km of the Wild-Atlantic-Way on a coastal route.

Route 5 offers a Greenway along the Wild Atlantic Way and a scenic and diverse experience that connects to the River Shannon

Route 5 (also known as Red Route 5) will also offer Wild-Atlantic-Way users linkage into a highly diverse areas. Route 5 will connect from Galway city out to Kinvara where users can then journey to the Burren lowlands, Gort and on to the Slieve Aughty Mountains. It then continues to Woodford toward Portumna, Shannonbridge and terminates in Athlone.

Overall, it appears as if Route 5 offers the most diverse natural scenery and things to see and do. Some of the other routes, however, have very strong support with their wish to connect to the potential Quiet Man Greenway, so chances of Route 5 selection, at this stage, appear challenging.

Route-5 was seen initially as the underdog of the route options, but with substantial support, via Facebook and the Route 5 website, Route 5 is now a real contender, so it’s up to us all to make this happen.

The public consultation deadline concludes in the next 24 hours so if people think a segregated Greenway/Cycleway along the Wild-Atlantic-Route is a good option then you can put forward the Route 5 option with a simple 30-second voting process – Just click below!
